During the early season, water conditions can vary greatly due to seasonal runoff. Fishing is often at its best. The Henry's Fork of the Snake River is usually very productive, and the rivers on the west side of Yellowstone Park (Madison, Firehole, Gibbon, Gardiner) can be at their best.

June 15 to August 15

The water condition generally comes into its prime during this period; and the weather is usually warm and comfortable with occasional afternoon showers. There are great hatches that characterize this period -- Green Drake hatch on the Henry's Fork, for example. Most spectacular is the Salmon Fly hatch, which occurs on many of the waters of this area, and the profuse Caddis hatches. Book early if this is your preference as it is a very popular time. Gulper fishing on Hebgen Lake or the Damsel hatch on Henry's Lake produce big fish. The Yellowstone River in the Park opens July 15 -- your chance for a Cutthroat trout on a dry fly!

Mid August to season's end

Water conditions are generally low and clear. Hatches are abundant with Caddis, Mayflies, and lesser Stoneflies in profusion. Hoppers and other Terrestrials abound until the heavy frosts do them in. This is the time to fish the Yellowstone, when Hoppers bring the big fish to the surface.

Riverside Ski Trail

Inside Yellowstone National Park, just a short block from Bud Lilly's Trout Shop, this double tracked partially groomed trail takes you through the woods and into the open meadows of the Madison River by the famous Barns Pools. The Upriver Loop is approximately 2.5 km and the Downriver Loop is approximately 5.9 km. Both loops require a traverse up and across a short steep hill or you can return via the track entry trail. Enjoy skiing into Yellowstone National Park beginning at trailheads along Highway 191 just North of West Yellowstone.

Ski Safety

While skiing in Yellowstone Country, make sure you have a thorough knowledge of the area, the weather, your equipment and your stamina. Carry extra dry clothing, food, water, maps, matches and first aid kit for a safe trip. And always let someone know where you are.
