Fly Reels

Fly reel selection is similar to choosing a fly rod; match the size of the reel to balance the rod you are using. This provides you with a reel that will hold sufficient backing for the type of fishing you plan on doing. Drag systems also vary from reel to reel with the simplest being a click pawl mechanism, while more advanced cork or disc drags feature "sub-stopping" power.
Most less expensive reels are made from stamped aluminum with metal and plastic parts. Premium reels are machined from aircraft grade aluminum with stainless steel parts and bearings to withstand corrosion.
Many of todays modern reels, such as Bauer, Abel, Galvan, Ross and Waterworks/Lamson, also feature a large arbor design that allows for faster line pick-up and less inertia on start up to protect tippets.
